Mother's Day Movies
Top Ten Mother's Day Movies to Watch with Your Mom -
When I flip the calendar to the month of May every year, it always starts me wondering what special activity I can plan for Mother's Day. Since my mother loves to watch movies, I'm going to rent some movies that we- and any other family members that want to join us- can enjoy watching together. If you're running out of ideas on what kind of special activity you can plan to do this year, why not consider these top ten Mother's Day movies to watch with your mom?
1. Steel Magnolias (1989)
This is one of my favorite movies that contains a strong mother/daughter relationship. It has a star-studded cast that includes: Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerritt and Sam Shepherd. I don't want to give anything away to ruin it for you, but the basic plot is about a group of close-knit friends who all live in a small town. Watch this top ten Mother's Day movie with your mom and you'll both laugh and cry.
2. Gypsy (1962)
If Mom enjoys movies from the 60's, then check out the movie "Gypsy." The stars in this movie include Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden. While the title would leave you to believe it's the life story of Burlesque star "Gypsy Rose Lee", the strongest character in this movie is her mother (Russell) who is determined to push her daughters into show biz success.
There's plenty of music in Gypsy, including the popular hits, "Let Me Entertain You" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses".
3. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)
Actress Ellen Burstyn won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this film, and Diane Ladd was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for their parts in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." The movie also had a spinoff TV show titled simply "Alice."
Besides Burstyn and Ladd, this top ten Mother's Day movie to watch with your mom stars
Kris Kristofferson. It's the story of a widow who packs up her young son and heads to California to carve out a new life for the two of them. Alice's job prospects are few, so she's forced to take a waitress job in a diner. But, in the process, she learns about life and love.
4. Terms of Endearment (1983)
The stars in this top ten Romance/Comedy/Drama includes Shirley MacLaine as the mother, "Aurora Greenway", Debra Winger as her daughter "Emma", Jack Nicholson, and Jeff Daniels. The movie, along with some of its cast, won big at the Academy Awards that year. "Terms of Endearment" won an award for Best Picture; MacLaine won Best Actress, and Nicholson won for Best Supporting Actor, just to name a few of the winners.
This plot of this top ten Mother's Day movie to watch with your mom is about the rocky relationship between possessive, widowed mother (MacLaine) and her headstrong daughter (Winger.) It will make you laugh and cry, and you'll probably be surprised at the ending too!
5. Stepmom (1998)
Stepmom stars Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris. Just as the title suggests, the plot revolves around Luke (Ed Harris) and his kids, his new wife Isabel (Julia Roberts) and, his
ex-wife Jackie (Susan Sarandon). Everyone has a hard time adjusting to the new family. Then, Jackie is diagnosed with cancer, and that's just one more problem they don't need. The heart-warming ending is probably the best part of the movie!
6. Cheaper By the Dozen (2003)
Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt star as the father and mother of the 12-kid Baker clan. Even though the movie shows more of Martin dealing with their brood than Hunt, it's the comical, yet heart-warming story of a family who struggles to stay together and win over life's big- and small problems alike!
7. Forrest Gump (1994)
Of all the top ten Mother's Day movies to watch with your mom, Forrest Gump is another one of my all-time favorites. It stars Tom Hanks as the simple-witted "Forrest Gump", Sally Field as his loving, supportive mother, Robin Wright Penn as "Jenny Curran", the girl Forrest loves, but can't hold, and Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan Taylor who becomes Forrest's friend and business partner after the war.
Gump's low IQ doesn't stop him from accomplishing many great feat in his life, and these events are shown as memories from his past. This movie is a must-see for anyone who roots for the underdog!
8. Hope Floats (1998)
This movie stars Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick Jr. and Gena Rowlands. Bullock plays the part of "Birdee Calvert", a former beauty queen who has an ideal life. But, when her life turns upside down, Calvert returns to her hometown in Texas with her young daughter to start anew.
9. Stella Dallas (1937)
This movie is one of those "oldies, but goodies" when it comes to flicks about a heartfelt relationship between a mother and her daughter. Barbara Stanwyck plays a working mother who gives everything she's got to raise her daughter the best she knows how. Only to be heart-broken later... Besides Stanwyck, the cast of "Stella Dallas" includes Anne Shirley, John Boles, Alan Hale and Marjorie Main.
Be sure to have two boxes of tissues on hand if you choose this movie- one for you, and one for mom!
If you want to see a newer version of this movie, Bette Midler starred in a remake titled "Stella" in 1990.
10. Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992)
Have you ever watched a movie that was so dumb that it was funny? That describes this one. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Estelle Getty and JoBeth Williams. Stallone plays the part of a hard cop and Getty plays his intrusive mother who pays him a visit. She gets involved in a case her son's investigating, and the comedy goes on from there!
