Motherly Love

By: Jan Smith

We all know that Mother’s love their kids. After all, we are all told that continuously by the media. And it is true. Probably one of the few things that the media does actually say, imply and reeenforces.

One of the reasons this happens is because it’s good for society.

But there are degrees of that love. Some Mothers will do anything to protect their kids. And there are some Mothers who love their kids but dislike the person they have become. Or dislike/disapprove of the action they have done. It can get very confusing.

To admit to this confusion doesn’t necessarily make you a bad Mother. I think it makes you a very honest Mother.

Let’s face it, as the kids grow up and test their own wings according to their own desires, wishes and inclinations; they invariably do things that a parent doesn’t like. Sometimes they do these things out of a sense of rebellion; sometimes out of a desire to ‘get-back’ at an overly protective or domineering parent or sometimes simply out of pig-headedness.

This doesn’t stop you from loving that child it just means that you don’t like what the person has done. So what’s wrong with admitting it?

What I find devastating is when a Mother doesn’t care. This signals to me that the Mother has given up on her child. If I find it hard to take, imagine how the poor child-person feels?

It is said that as long as you have a parent alive, you will always be a child. And it’s quite true. While you have a living-parent, you are their child. Even if you are 80 and they are 100.

I wish I had read more about parenting an older child. I only read about child-raising which didn’t prepare me for when the kids were adults. Now all these books are available on audio books but my kids have all long-gone down their own life paths. Still, I can listen and learn all about the mistakes I made. I suppose I’m writing this article for young Mothers-to-be.

Learn all you can now because as your child grows into adulthood, you will be far too busy remembering that you love them.
